How to Paint a Bookshelf: 6 Steps

Step 1. Choose The Paint

You’ll never regret going with quality products, and that includes your paint choice. A premium paint that’s made for indoor painting is the best paint for bookshelves and is going to give it that extra pop that’s needed for it to stand out.

Step 2. Remove Hardware

Remember to take the hardware and doors off the bookcase. Use a screwdriver to take off any screws or hinges you’re not going to paint. Hot tip: Put painter’s tape over where all the screws will go so paint doesn’t drip into the holes, making it harder to get the screws back in.

Step 3. Sand and Clean

Wipe down your bookshelf. A damp cloth works best to get rid of any dust or dirt. Once clean, use wood filler to get rid of any random nail holes or nicks on the bookcase. Then, sand it down with a sanding sponge.

Step 4. Prime

The best way to paint bookcases, especially when painting a wooden bookcase, is to prime it. If you have dark colors, priming is a great option because the dark colors easily seep through and will require multiple coats of paint.

Step 5. Paint It!

Let the primer dry before painting the bookshelf. Then, apply your paint! If you’ve already primed your bookcase, two coats of paint should be enough.

Step 6. Put The Hardware Back and Decorate

Take off your painter’s tape and put the hardware back in. It’s time to decorate! Add books, knickknacks, souvenirs, and other decorations to personalize your newly painted bookshelf.
